Configure two factors authentication for your Microsoft 365 account (first time)

This guide describes how to configure two-factor authentication (2FA) the first time you sign in to your Microsoft 365 account. Microsoft will ask you to use the Microsoft Authenticator app, but you can choose to receive an SMS code or telephone call if the app is not available. If you have problems with the SMS, you can try verification by call.

Configuration of two-factor authentication (first time)

  1. Sign in with initial credentials and change your password

Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account onportal.office.comusing the initial credentials provided. Upon first login, you will be asked to change your password. Enter a new secure password and confirm the change.

Tip:Create a complex password using a combination of capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols to ensure maximum security.
  2. Reply to the 2FA prompt

After changing your password, Microsoft will ask you to configure two-factor authentication. Click "Next" to proceed with the setting.

  3. Choose the authentication method

Microsoft suggests using the Microsoft Authenticator app. If you installed it, select "Next" and follow the next steps. Alternatively, choose "I want to configure a different method", select "Telephone" and enter your mobile number to receive a code via SMS or call.

Tip:For a faster and safer experience, we recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app instead of SMS or call verification.
  4. Manage problems with SMS

If you do not receive the SMS code, select the option to receive a phone call. If the call is in English, listen to the message and press the # button to confirm the verification.

Note:Make sure the phone number entered is correct and that your device has a good network connection to receive SMS or calls.
  5. Download the Microsoft Authenticator application

If you choose the Microsoft Authenticator app, download it to your mobile device from the App Store or fromGoogle Play Store.
